This 9000 square foot
adaptive reuse of an industrial warehouse is designed to house Q Division's
growing recording studios and record label. The scheme centers on two recording
suites, each with a studio, isolation booths, a control room, a musicians'
lounge, and producer's retreat. The program also includes a digital mixing
studio, an open office area, conference rooms, and tech rooms. The design
harmonizes with the industrial shell of the building, employing industrial
lighting, and exposed infrastructure. Exacting demands for the acoustics of
the spaces required detailed design of acoustical isolation walls, carefully
sealed fenestration, and a flexible paneling system to add absorption, diffusion
and reflection in a flexible configuration. Acoustical principles also guide
the forms of the spaces, requiring non-parallel, non-focal spaces for recording,
as well as differentiated space-types to provide a range of acoustical scenarios
within each recording studio.
