Brewer Marina

120110 aerial01We are happy to announce that our new building (rendered above) for Brewer Yacht Yards at their Hawthorne Cove Marina, is in the works. Situated near a historic part of the City of Salem Massachusetts, on the industrial waterfront, the building will provide a much needed indoor environment for boat repair, workshops, and office space.

OFT Renovations

We’ve previously shared a few updates about our projects in Philadelphia, PA, and this is one of our biggest updates so far:

Part of a multi-phase project, we recently completed the main courtyard (here), and the second phase fitness wing is about to begin (here), and now we’re excited to share some awesome interior renderings of the lobby and amenity spaces! As with the earlier fitness center, our goal was to create spaces within spaces and de-emphasize and subvert the rigidity of the original building’s precast concrete module. However, rather than a raw, exposed aesthetic  we are creating a more refined, warm, contemporary space with various wood and tile finishes. Expected Completion 2017.

Hyde Park Branch – Boston Public Library

140717-BPL-035-mod

For anyone in need of something to do this weekend, Common Boston 2016, a festival celebrating “architecturally, culturally, and historically significant sites throughout Boston” will be open Saturday, June 4 – Sunday, June 5. Open house viewings of many beautiful buildings will be held throughout the city, and we are especially excited that the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library is on the list, Saturday from 9am – 5pm.

A couple of years ago, we designed the Thomas M. Menino Learning Lab. Named for Boston’s mayor from 1993 to 2014, who was born and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood, it offers a space for people of all ages in the community to share knowledge, and to have access to new information, experiences, and opportunities

Contemporary Fitness Center

160527-reverse-lounge

With the exterior courtyard in construction, Derek Bloom Architects is hard at work on developing concepts for the One Franklin Town resident fitness center.

The existing building is a 20-story precast concrete tower, with a repetitive and controlled structural grid. Our proposed design seeks to break away from the regularity of this grid and to create new spaces-within-spaces through the use of non-rectilinear geometries that wrap floor, wall, and ceiling. To bring a new contemporary aesthetic to One Franklin Town, we have stripped the space down to its concrete walls, exposed its ceilings, and built it back up with simple finishes: hexagonal tiles, vibrant paint, and  suspended drywall ceilings. The most significant and most challenging proposal has been to cut new passage ways through the massive concrete walls that support the building, in order to create greater connectivity and transparency throughout the fitness center. To be built in rolling phases, the next phase will be to renovate the remainder of the first floor, including entry lobbies, concierge area, resident lounge, wifi lounge, function room, and offices.

New Restaurant in the Works

160128 restaurant render

We’re excited to share an exterior rendering of a new restaurant on Mass Ave in the Central Square area of Cambridge!

The project is a gut renovation of an existing space with a large scope. Exterior work will feature a new facade and a new entry ramp for ADA accessibility, and the interior will include an entirely redesigned floor plan, bar, lounge seating area, and banquette seating in the dining room. It is anticipated the restaurant will be an American Trattoria – a casual spin on fine dining with a lively, yet laid-back atmosphere. The design is in constant progress, and even at the time of this posting, the concepts have been refined further than that of the rendering. We look forward to posting more as the design really takes shape.

Currently in Construction

Construction of our design for an office fit-out for Forest City Residential is well underway in Cambridge, MA.

Adding consolidated office space, this new leasing area will provide an open setting for new lounge space, a conference area, and leasing management, and will feature custom mahogany casework, woven organic lighting, and custom wall graphics for a contemporary pop of color.

Work progresses on our related project renovations to an 1,111-SF market-rate unit, which will continue the industrial couture of the existing apartment building where the project is located. With soaring ceilings and expansive, ground-level natural light from oversize curtain-wall windows, the unit boasts loft-style living in a contemporary setting, with multiple amenities in reach from its centralized MIT locale. Both projects are expected to be complete by early February.

One Franklin Town Courtyard approaching completion!

We are proud to share some of our recent photos from our urban landscape design currently being built in Philadelphia’s Center City neighborhood. We saved a mature hibiscus arbor (complete with Nam June Paik video installation!) and several Sweet Bay Magnolias, in designing this modern, bermed landscape. The main Callowhill facade will soon have a new canopy and signage, seen in rendering below.

Carmelite Monastery of Roxbury is Complete

After months of design and careful craftsmanship on the construction site, the Boston Carmel Monastery is complete. Our design included the creation of a new primary prayer space, a complete renovation of the choir and preparatory, new work rooms for the sisters, renovations to the third floor work spaces, HVAC and lighting updates, and new chapel doors. We are thankful for the experience of working in such a beautiful historic building with a wonderful client. Fully image gallery and project info on the website.
