Situated near a historic part of the City of Salem Massachusetts, on the industrial waterfront, the building will provide a much needed indoor environment for boat repair, workshops, and office space.

We are seeking to fill two full-time positions:

1. Project Leader +/- 5-10 years experience, architecture, able to run a project and lead a small team.
2. Interior Designer, +/- 3 yrs experience minimum.

Come join our creative studio in South End, where team members collaborate on all aspects of a project, and everyone designs. We have several modern residential projects kicking off right now, and a consistent flow of various other typologies, such as this year’s design work underway for a new Cambridge restaurant, Northeastern University, a coworking space in Marblehead, and an urban flower shop in South End, among others.

We are looking for an energetic and creative architect with 5+ years experience designing, problem-solving and detailing. You should be comfortable presenting to clients, and being on site during construction administration.

We are also looking for a talented interior designer to contribute across all projects: Higher Ed, Commercial and Residential. Ideal candidate has familiarity with commercial interiors, commercial furniture, and residential interiors. You will create idea boards, sample boards, presentations, take clients to showrooms, and lead the interior specifications across multiple projects.

Another exciting project on the boards in Marblehead, MA, an addition and renovation to what the Owner describes as a “fish shack,” (which we think does not do it justice)… Sited on picturesque Redd’s Pond, with views across the Old Burial Ground Hill Cemetary, to the cove, Marblehead Light(house) in Chandler Covey Park, and the ocean beyond.

Ideal candidate should have proficiency and interest in design, construction drawings, graphics and web. Derek Bloom Architects is a small design studio located in Boston’s South End. It all started with a humble camp perched above the Slocum River in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Our clients had the vision to see the potential in this modest sized house, and the view that it would command, with a little bit of selective tree thinning. The house appeared to be a prefabricated house of some kind, as the front door and entry steps faced not towards the approach or driveway, but towards the rear of the property. While this “front” did face the view, nothing else about the house design suggested the majestic landscape that it was sitting in.p1070214

Our design began with a focus on making the house more site-specific, opening spaces to each other to create an open plan, turning compact rooms into interconnected and expansive spaces. After some debate over window size, it was decided to remove the entire wall of the house and replace it with an expanse of glass that would maximize the connection to the outdoors. We captured this in renderings posted here previously.

Ethan Smith Carpentry from Rhode Island was selected as the General Contractor, and work began in February, in a sprint for the summer, when the house would host family gatherings. The house was temporarily supported, while the facade was surgically removed. A steel moment frame was fabricated to re-support the house in the most efficient way possible, maintaining maximum sight lines for the new glass wall.

Meanwhile the interiors were extensively renovated with two new bathrooms, a new kitchen, all new lighting, and finishes, and a new color palette. The central stair was opened up to two sides, serving as a central focal point to the interiors. The owners enjoyed their first summer in the home this summer. OFT Renovations

We’ve previously shared a few updates about our projects in Philadelphia, PA, and this is one of our biggest updates so far:

Part of a multi-phase project, we recently completed the main courtyard (here), and the second phase fitness wing is about to begin (here), and now we’re excited to share some awesome interior renderings of the lobby and amenity spaces! As with the earlier fitness center, our goal was to create spaces within spaces and de-emphasize and subvert the rigidity of the original building’s precast concrete module. However, rather than a raw, exposed aesthetic  we are creating a more refined, warm, contemporary space with various wood and tile finishes. Expected Completion 2017.
