Back Bay Residence,
Boston
under construction-
completion: dec 2008
This home is one of the few single family occupied buildings remaining
in Boston's Historic Back Bay neighborhood. Prior to beginning the interior
renovations, a sub-basement was dug below the entire footprint to add storage,
and service spaces. A rooftop headhouse was added with views of the Charles
River, and Cambridge beyond. On the interior of the building, the historic
detail is preserved where possible on the lower floors, and is made to interface
with modern detailing, which carries through to the upper floors. The client
was encouraged to utilize eco-friendly systems where possible. A geothermal
heat exchanging loop was drilled to a depth of 1000 feet, providing a low-fuel
consumption solution. A glass floor on the top level, provides daylight into
the center of the plan, and a glass-bottomed fountain surrounded by glass
pavers in the courtyard are designed to provide daylighting in the sub-grade
floors.
